貝から作られる岩絵の具

Iwaenogu Made of Seashells

There are some places where shells are in a pile in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture, even though it’s surrounded by land without sea.

This is called a “Kaizuka” (Shell mound) and the seashells are brought all the way from the sea and dried in the sun.

The dried shells after more than 10 years is over, are crushed and turned into “Iwaenogu”(natural mineral pigments).

People used it to paint the faces of Kyoto dolls with Iwaenogu a long time ago.

It’s used for Japanese paintings even now, and for repairing shines and castles.

Iwaenogu has been protected as a traditional culture of Japan.
