The Boy’s Festival on May 5th

May 5th is called “Boy’s Festival”, and it’s a day for wish for boys to grow healthy.

“Helmet” and “armor” is decorated in the house, and the “Koinobori” (Colorful carp banners) is outside.

The Koinobori originally came from a Chinese story, ad it’s decorated to hope that children will grow safely and strongly.

Also, a lot of Koinobori is decorated in the river for the celebration in some areas.

This day is mainly for boys of celebration, as for girls, March 3rd is called “Doll Festival” and there is a day for a festival to hope that boys will be grown successfully in the same way.

5月5日は「端午の節句」と言われ、
男の子が健康に成長することを願う日です。
家の中には「兜」や「鎧」を飾り、
外には「こいのぼり」を飾ります。
こいのぼりはもともと中国の故事から来たもので、
子供が無事に強く成長することを願って飾ります。
地域によっては川辺にたくさんのこいのぼりを飾るなどして
お祝いをします。
この日は主に男の子のお祝いの日ですが、
女の子は3月3日の「ひな祭り」で
同じように無事に成長することを願うお祭りの日があります。
