Karuta Hajime

There is a card game called “Karuta” in Japan from olden days.
It’s been played since the Heian period.

The “Yomibito” reads aloud a famous Waka (Traditional Poem consisting of 31 syllables) and players fight over the card written the same song.
The person who tags the card first can take it and whoever has the most cards at the end is the game winner.

There is also a Karuta made with simple sentences and pictures for small children.

“Karuta Hajime” is held on every New Years Season, in this year, a quaint Karuta meeting that people are wearing the costume of the Heian period was held at the Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto.

Woman’s kimono of the Heian era have many layers and are gorgeous.
